Sharp recently launched digital copies of Blu-Ray disc with three layers, which have a storage capacity of 100 GB. This capacity is equivalent to two times the storage capacity of Blu-Ray disc formats available today. Blu-Ray disc of new species is named VR-100BR1.

According to Sharp, Blu-Ray disc of this new version can also save recordings to digital TV broadcasting for 12 hours or almost equivalent to 9 hours of digital satellite broadcasting. But the Sharp does not explain how much the price for this Blu-Ray disc. However, VR-100BR1 expected with this format will be priced BDXL between 55 dollars to 60 dollars at launch.

Blu-ray disc 100BR1 VR-Sharp will be available in Japan starting on July 30, but there is no further news about the launch date in the U.S. and other countries. Sharp plans to release this product in conjunction with the launch of AQUOS Blu-ray recorders latest.

VR-100BR1 made to specifications according to the new format of the Blu-Ray disc that is introduced by the Association BDXL Blu-Ray disc in April. This BDXL format capable of write formats with a maximum capacity of up to 12 GB for one-way and re-write the total next to 100 GB.

He specifications of the Blu-Ray this new type are to perform additional recording layers. The more layers the greater the storage capacity. Layer on a standard Blu-Ray disc recorders only have two layers of data storage capacity with up to 50 GB. Blu-Ray disc format allows coating BDXL recorder from three to four layers.

To use the new Blu-Ray disc, you may need to have a new edition of the hardware. But maybe Sharp will also introduce a hardware device that is compatible with Blu-Ray disc version of the old.

Actually, the desire to produce a digital chip with a capacity of 100 GB commercially gone on long enough. In 2002, researchers at Taiwan National University announced that they have developed a prototype 100 GB disks that are compatible with contemporary CD and DVD technology. Two years later, Sony announced that it has developed a Blu-ray discs with eight-layer capable of storing 200 GB of data. At that time, Sony also has plans to commercially introduce a Blu-ray layer 100 GB in 2007, but it never materialized.

Currently Sharp has become the first to launch its commercial business via a Blu-Ray disc with a capacity of 100 GB. Looking ahead Sharp'll probably do another innovation by making Blu-Ray disc that can do the write once format with a maximum capacity of 128 GB on the Blu-ray chip to speed up charging the same content. We look forward to it.
