Google more aggressively plugging its influence in web technology. This time, the company is headquartered in Mountain View, California, USA that released the "video codec" based on the latest open source that is named WebM and has provided an SDK (software development kit) to the developer community.
WebM constructed of VP8, web technology acquired by Google from On2 Technology in February. New codec is a combination between VP8 with Ogg Vorbis audio format which is also based on open source. The combination is free to use without royalty.
"We think the video should be free and open to make ready for it," said Sundar Pinchai, Google's VP of Product Marketing in the conference Google I / O in San Francisco, Thursday (05/20/2010) local time. He said the presence of a web video format based on open source is intended to produce high-quality content impressions.
Google already uses this new codec to all YouTube videos and homemade Chrome has been supported browser. Mozilla has also been claimed to be supported in Firefox as well WebM Opera Software on its Internet browser.
WebM present among the competition web video formats. There are several competing formats such as H.264 and Flash. The difference is they are not based on open source format.
